Most of us have heard, pretty much our entire lives, that we only use about 10% of our brain and that if we could ever use all of our brain, the results would be miraculous! Unfortunately, this is an urban myth. Although hundreds of famous people have stated these facts, we actually use 100% of our brain at all times.
The facts are these: whenever even a tiny part of the human brain is damaged, catastrophic results occur. If you remove even 2% of the brain, you could wind up with a zombie, a vegetable, or a politician.
So here’s the real question you need to consider:
How well am I using my mind? Am I using it at maximum efficiency? On a scale of 1-10, 10 being highest, where do I fit? How do I begin to operate with Maximum Brain Power? Read on…
The First Key
It turns out, there are three critical areas that are largely responsible for how well or poorly we generate "Brain Power."
But what is Brain Power? We all already knows what it means to us. It’s not really IQ, and it’s not how many advanced college degrees you have. It’s operating at Peak Performance Levels, at a "10" level, isn’t it ?
At this level, your thinking is crisp, your intuition is sound, your instincts are aligned, you are truly "in the zone" and firing on all cylinders! So how do we get to that level?
Here’s the first vital trait: Pay Attention!
Paying attention is all about being fully here, in this moment in time, on this planet, in this room, fully aware of what is happening. It’s being able to see exactly what is in front of you, not what you think it is. It’s the ability to perceive and feel and sense present time reality.
There are many ways to train yourself to improve your awareness of the present moment, and I invite you to simply visit your bookstore or type into your favorite search engine the phrase "Be here" or "Pay Attention."
My personal favorite is active meditation, followed by taking a short walk outdoors. During this time, I make a practice of noticing everything I can, one object at a time, one moment in time.
So our first vital skill to develop is to Pay Attention!
As Shakespeare said, "To Be or Not to Be, that is the question." What will you choose?
The Next Two Vital Keys
Our next vital trait has to do with starvation.
Most everyone in the world is Starved for Attention. No one pays us enough attention, we can’t get enough of it. No one listens, no one cares, we’re all alone! Or so we feel.
The next time you are in a crowd of people, practice watching what the people are doing. Most often they are talking about their favorite subject: themselves! And the people they are talking to are simply not listening. How many times do you find yourself wondering what the other person just said? How many times have you forgotten another person’s name? Were you listening, or were you really thinking about something else, or waiting for your turn to speak?
This skill is absolutely vital when it comes to sales. In fact you could describe the entire process of sales in 4 words:
Ask Questions and Listen!
So, our second Vital Skill to build maximum brainpower is Start Listening!
Our third and final vital skill has to do with love.
About 90% of us suffer from one of the most common of human maladies. We are almost exclusively thinking about, dreaming about, talking to, looking at, wondering about, admiring, hating, loving, or rejecting one single person in our world… Ourselves! Our favorite piece of furniture is the mirror. We are absolutely, madly, unequivocally in love with ourselves.
This self-centeredness absolutely cripples our ability to use our full Brain Power! How can you possibly operate at peak efficiency when you are only considering yourself in the equation? It’s a very interesting thing. When you start getting out of yourself, you start learning how to use your full mental capacity.
When you join your brain power with other people, the total mental firepower expands and expands. In business, it’s called a mastermind group. In networking, it’s called a networking group. It is a fact that when you can "link up" with others, the total group consciousness expands. This is the secret to brainstorming and innovation. When you join with others, your brainpower expands !
So our third vital skill is: get out of yourself!
Well there you have it. The 3 Keys to increasing your Brain Power:
Pay Attention
Start Listening
Get out of Yourself
